Celebrating its 30th Anniversary on April 2nd 2018, Subaru Technica International has had an impressive following since their inception. Subaru Impreza WRX/Sti buyers can often be describes as “cultish” in their love for these cars. It’s not the status of owning one, but more the this under the radar “cool” that aficionados love about the Subaru WRX
The Subaru WRX has been around since the mid 1990s, introduced in 1992 with the sedan and wagon body styles, until the ultra hot WRX STI arrived to change it into the type of vehicle it has morphed into today. Subaru STIs were initially converted from regular WRXs at the Subaru factory. The mods were mostly mechanical, so that the STIs ended up with 250hp, stronger suspension and transmission, and in case of the lightweight “RA” edition, an electro-Subaru WRX STI Langley BC Used Subaru for Sale Langley BC mechanical differential as well.
The earlier Impreza WRX was never a design success, but with 250 horsepower aficionados were quick to forgive the bug-eyed look. America eventually got the car though it only had 227 horses, and with the four-speed automatic, this was more about traction than speed anyway.
The next update for the STI was when it was “formally” introduced to North America in 2004. After World Rally Championship wins in both 2001 and 2003, Blue Imprezas with golden wheels were a hot commodity to Subaru fans. In 2006 the engine was changed to the 2.5-liter turbocharged intercooled EJ255 for more torque and 230 horsepower.
Radical design changes came about in 2008 in a bid to bring the WRX to a more mainstream audience adding a trendier look, a softened suspension and a less beefy body.
Though the STI hatchback sold well, the superfans of the STI were disappointed about leaving the WRX racing roots. Subaru quickly realized the mistake of alienating their “hardcore” fans, so the 2009 returned to the beefed up suspension while the power was pumped up to 265HP.
In 2011 Subaru gave the STI a facelift, they called this chassis the GV… and after not having the sedan for three years, they reintroduced it into the lineup. The new STI sedan was a wide bot and it is unmistakable with its flared fenders and front skirts plus it has that iconic STI wing the 2/5 flat 4 turbocharged engine was carried over from the previous chassis but they stiffened up the suspension to regain that sporty feel that every STI owner was sport and that car remained pretty much the same until Subaru rewrote the book again on the STI in 2015.
In 2015 the Impreza name was dropped from WRX models, as the WRX and WRX STI are simply performance trims of the Impreza which continue today. Differences include higher output engines, firmer suspension, larger brakes, lowered ride height, larger intakes and slightly re-sculpted body panels, in fact the entire front end bodywork plus the rear quarter panels were unique to the WRX . The biggest performance gains were from the 2015 redesigned chassis. Structural stiffness and spring rates were up 40 to 60 percent, raising road holding numbers significantly.
